Abstract
This volume explores the significance of works of mixed genre in painting and drama in later eighteenth-century France, principally through a comparison of the work of two particular figures, the dramatist Michel-Jean Sedaine and the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze. The close comparison of the most complex of their individual works in the context of specific political and aesthetic disputes will also help to illuminate points of intersection in their experiments in genre. This approach to Sedaine and Greuze will also try to expose the gap between their practice and its reception by the «philosophes». Both Greuze and Sedaine are to be understood as sophisticated practioners, aware of their position within their respective traditions and eager to innovate. Their careers were marked not only by this audacity of formal experiment, however, but by a stubborn originality. They both maintained a turbulent and ambiguous relationship both with those who sought to exploit their work, and with established aesthetics rules. It is as ambitious, intelligent and self-conscious artists that this work will compare the two men, and not as joint conduits for any theory, philosophy, feeling or «Zeitgeist».
